President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday assented to the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill, formally establishing the legal framework for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. The signing took place at the State House, Abuja, around 5:00 p.m., with top National Assembly officials and senior government representatives present.
The bill had been approved by both chambers of the National Assembly on Tuesday after weeks of deliberations and public consultations on key electoral reforms. The amended law is designed to enhance transparency, streamline logistics, and address operational challenges noted in previous election cycles.
The move comes amid intense national discussions over the electronic transmission of election results—a long-standing and contentious issue in Nigeria’s electoral process. Civil society groups, opposition parties, and pro-democracy advocates have been calling for mandatory real-time transmission of results from polling units directly to INEC’s central system to prevent manipulation and boost public trust.
Last week, protesters demonstrated outside the National Assembly in Abuja, urging lawmakers to enshrine live electronic result transmission into the amended legislation. Advocates argued that this step would minimize discrepancies during collation and improve overall transparency.
However, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and some electoral stakeholders have raised concerns over Nigeria’s uneven telecommunications infrastructure. They have recommended a phased or hybrid approach, allowing manual collation in areas with poor network coverage, while enabling electronic transmission where feasible.

Analysts suggest that President Tinubu’s signing of the bill signals the government’s commitment to completing electoral reforms well before the 2027 elections, giving INEC adequate time to implement changes, deploy technology, and conduct voter education. Early legal clarity is also expected to reduce pre-election disputes and provide political parties with a clearer operational roadmap.
