The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will suspend operations on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day.

The announcement was made in a notice shared on the mission’s official X page on Sunday. The statement read, “The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day.”

According to the embassy, the holiday was initially created to mark the birthday of George Washington, the first president of the United States. Over time, it has evolved into a day set aside to honour all U.S. presidents and their roles in shaping the nation’s history.

The mission added that Presidents’ Day also recognises the global influence of U.S. leaders. In a related note, it highlighted that Washington established the first “Badge of Military Merit,” which later became known as the Purple Heart, a medal that still carries his image today.

Presidents’ Day is celebrated annually on the third Monday of February and is observed as a federal public holiday across the United States.
