Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reconsider the February 20, 2027 date fixed for the next general elections, citing concerns that it coincides with the holy month of Ramadan.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page on Friday, Atiku noted that the proposed election day falls within the Ramadan period, expected to last from February 7 to March 8, 2027 — a time dedicated to fasting, prayers, and spiritual reflection for millions of Muslims across Nigeria.
He emphasized that nationwide elections require widespread participation, energy, and focus, arguing that scheduling such a critical civic exercise during a major religious season shows poor planning and a lack of sensitivity to Nigeria’s religious diversity.

“In a diverse country like Nigeria, inclusive planning is not optional; it is fundamental,” he said, stressing that the selection of a suitable election date reflects “competence, foresight, and respect for citizens.”
Atiku further questioned INEC’s preparedness for the 2027 polls, warning that struggles over scheduling could undermine public confidence in the commission’s ability to deliver credible elections. He noted that if the electoral body falters at such a basic stage, Nigerians may doubt its capacity to conduct free, fair, and transparent polls.
