British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital following a road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday, an incident that claimed the lives of two of his close friends, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami.
In a joint statement released on Wednesday and co-signed by Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, and Ogun State Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the two state governments extended condolences to the bereaved families.
“The governments of Lagos and Ogun states once again commiserate with the families of the two young men, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, who tragically and unfortunately lost their lives in the road accident involving Anthony Joshua. We pray The Almighty grant the repose of their souls whilst granting their families and loved ones the fortitude to bear this very sad and painful loss,” the statement said.
The statement confirmed that the former heavyweight boxing champion was discharged late on Tuesday afternoon after receiving medical care. It described Joshua as being “heavy hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends,” but added that he was “deemed clinically fit to recuperate from home.”

The governments also praised the medical team that handled the emergency, noting:

The impact led to the death of two passengers and left others, including the boxer, with injuries.
Authorities have stated that investigations into the crash are ongoing, while members of the public have been urged to remain patient and cooperative as officials continue to manage the situation.
