Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally enrolled as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.

The registration was completed on Monday, just days after Atiku informed ADC supporters and stakeholders in Adamawa of his intention to join the party. His aide, Abdul Rasheeth, confirmed the development in a statement shared with PUNCH Online.

Visuals from the event showed Atiku’s convoy welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd. Supporters drummed, sang, and held placards bearing his image as they accompanied him to the venue. The former vice president acknowledged the cheering crowd, waving from his vehicle before receiving his ADC membership card.

Shortly afterward, Atiku posted a brief message on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “It’s official. -AA”

This move cements his alliance with the coalition party he publicly endorsed in July as a unified platform for opposition figures — including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal — to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming election cycle.

Before now, Atiku and other key opposition leaders had held off on formally joining the party. His registration is expected to bolster the ADC’s standing and enhance efforts to consolidate opposition strength ahead of 2027.
