Veteran Nigerian producer and music mogul Don Jazzy has reflected on the turbulent period that followed the sudden breakup of Mo’Hits Records in 2012, admitting that he nearly gave up on music entirely.
Speaking in a recent chat with Rolling Stone, the Mavin Records founder revealed that the fallout between him and D’banj hit him so hard that he considered relocating abroad to start afresh.
“When Mo’Hits ended, I thought that was it. I almost packed up to move abroad. But friends encouraged me to stay and start again, and Mavin Records was born. Since then, I’ve learned not to let anything break me,” he said.
Don Jazzy noted that the experience, though painful, became a turning point in his career, helping him develop resilience and clarity for the future.

Shortly after the end of Mo’Hits, he launched Mavin Records — a new label that not only brought back familiar faces like Dr SID, D’Prince, and Wande Coal but also introduced a new generation of stars such as Tiwa Savage, Korede Bello, Reekado Banks, and Di’ja.
Mavin Records today stands as one of Africa’s most successful record labels, boasting top acts including Rema, Ayra Starr, Ladipoe, Crayon, Boy Spyce, Magixx, Bayanni, Johnny Drille, and DJ Big N.
In 2024, the label reached another major milestone when Universal Music Group acquired a majority stake in Mavin Global, marking a new chapter in its global expansion.
