President Bola Tinubu has conferred national honours on members of the national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for winning the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament.

Each player received the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), $100,000, and a three-bedroom flat in the Federal Capital Territory.

Vice President Kashim Shettima presented the awards to the team on Monday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on behalf of the president.

Members of the technical crew were also rewarded with $50,000 and a flat each.

The gesture comes a day after D’Tigress defeated Mali 78–64 in the final of the tournament held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The victory earned Nigeria its fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and seventh overall, a record on the continent.

With the win, D’Tigress also booked an automatic qualification to the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Berlin, Germany.

The honours mirror those conferred on the Super Falcons last month after they won a record 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.

Each member of the Super Falcons also received the OON, $100,000 and a flat in Abuja under the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme.

Tinubu’s administration has received praise from some quarters for recognising the contributions of Nigerian female athletes.

D’Tigress are now expected to begin preparations for the World Cup, with fans hopeful the team will build on its success on the global stage.
