The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, is facing intense scrutiny following accusations of sexual harassment and intimidation by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central.
Although Akpabio has denied the allegations, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for an independent investigation into the matter.

Natasha’s Allegations and Senate Dispute
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who recently clashed with Akpabio in the Senate, claimed in an interview with Arise Television that her ongoing ordeal stemmed from her refusal to entertain Akpabio’s alleged advances.
Her dispute with the Senate President escalated after she discovered that her seat in the Red Chamber had been changed without her prior knowledge.
Natasha’s protest led to a temporary disruption of legislative proceedings, and she was subsequently referred to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions for disciplinary review. The committee, chaired by Senator Neda Imaseun (LP, Edo South), has been given two weeks to present its findings.
Defamation Suit Against Akpabio
In response to the controversy, Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a defamation suit of N100 billion against Akpabio at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja. Also named in the suit is Akpabio’s senior legislative aide, Mfon Patrick.
According to her lawyer, Victor Giwa, the lawsuit stems from a statement made on Facebook by Patrick, titled “Is the Local Content Committee of the Senate Natasha’s Birthright?” The statement allegedly contained derogatory remarks about Akpoti-Uduaghan, including claims that she focused more on makeup and wearing transparent outfits rather than legislative duties.
Giwa argued that the remarks were defamatory and had damaged her reputation among her colleagues and the public.
Natasha’s Detailed Allegations Against Akpabio
During her interview, Akpoti-Uduaghan provided details of her alleged experience with Akpabio, dating back to December 8, 2023, when she and her husband attended his pre-birthday gathering in Uyo. She recounted:
“We went to his house in Ikot-Ekpene, and he held my hand, saying he wanted to show me around. My husband was present, but at one point, Akpabio quickened his pace while still holding my hand. In a particular sitting room, he asked, ‘Do you like my house?’ I replied, ‘Of course, yes.’ Then he said, ‘Now that you are a senator, you should create time for us to spend quality time here.’”
She further alleged that her attempts to raise a motion on corrupt practices at Ajaokuta Steel Company were repeatedly blocked until the sixth attempt. When she inquired about the delay, she claimed Akpabio responded:
“Natasha, I am the chief presiding officer of the Senate. You can enjoy a whole lot if you take care of me and make me happy.”
She likened her experience to a student being punished for refusing to engage in a sexual relationship with a lecturer.
Atiku Calls for Independent Investigation
Reacting to the allegations, Atiku Abubakar emphasized the need for a thorough and impartial investigation, stating:
“The Nigerian Senate represents the voice of the people. Its leadership must uphold the highest standards of integrity, dignity, and respect. These allegations are grave and deserve a transparent investigation.”
Atiku also stressed that sexual harassment in the workplace hinders women’s progress and that such claims must be taken seriously, particularly when involving public officials with significant power and influence.
Akpabio and His Wife Deny Allegations
Akpabio’s media consultant, Kenny Okulogbo, dismissed the allegations as baseless, attributing Akpoti-Uduaghan’s grievances to her removal as Chair of the Senate Committee on Local Content.
Similarly, Akpabio’s wife, Ekaette, defended her husband, stating: “He is a disciplined man who respects women. In all his years in governance, no woman has ever made such claims against him.”
Senator Kingibe Weighs In
Senator Ireti Kingibe (LP, FCT) appeared to side with Akpabio, asserting that the Senate operates by rules and that seat relocations are common. She noted that several senators, including men, had been moved and accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of receiving preferential treatment.
On the sexual harassment allegations, Kingibe refrained from making definitive statements, revealing only that Akpoti-Uduaghan had once confided in her about an uncomfortable meeting request from Akpabio.
Calls for Caution and Workplace Safety for Women
Former Senator Shehu Sani cautioned against escalating the situation, while activist Aisha Yesufu lamented the prevalence of workplace harassment in Nigeria, tweeting:
“From #SexForGrades to #SexForMotion. When will Nigerian women be safe?”
What’s Next?
As the Senate committee reviews Akpoti-Uduaghan’s case, and the lawsuit unfolds in court, Nigerians await the outcome of what has become a highly controversial power struggle in the Senate.
Will an independent investigation be conducted? Will Akpabio be held accountable, or will the accusations fade away in political maneuvering? The coming weeks will provide answers.
