President Bola Tinubu has authorized an extensive retirement benefits package for service chiefs and top-ranking military officers, sparking outrage from various stakeholders, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), medical experts, and civic organizations.

The approved perks include $20,000 annual foreign medical treatment, bulletproof SUVs replaced every four years, domestic aides, and luxury security arrangements.

According to the Harmonized Terms and Conditions of Service for the Nigerian Armed Forces, these benefits apply to the Chief of Defence Staff, service chiefs, and other senior officers.

The document also outlines two Toyota Hilux vehicles or equivalent for lieutenant generals, along with medical treatment allowances and additional personnel support.

Lower-ranking officers are allocated benefits proportionate to their positions, with colonels receiving medical care only within Nigeria and a Toyota Corolla or equivalent.

Critics argue these packages reflect misplaced government priorities. NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu, called for reinvesting such benefits into Nigeria’s health system, stating, “Any retirement benefit should be given locally, not abroad.”

Similarly, Prof. Muhammad Muhammad of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association condemned the allocation for foreign medical care, noting it signals a lack of confidence in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

Accountability Lab Nigeria’s Friday Odeh labeled the benefits “alarming” given the nation’s economic hardships. “Millions face poverty while resources are spent on luxuries for a select few,” he remarked, urging citizens to question such policies.

Amid continued insecurity, civic groups argue that the packages overshadow pressing issues like healthcare reform and public welfare.

Critics urge the government to reallocate resources toward upgrading hospitals and addressing the needs of ordinary Nigerians rather than enhancing elite privileges.

President Tinubu is yet to do anything concerning the talks among all individuals. They all still show the sign of displeasure hoping the president goes back on his words.
