Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, and former Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Sunday, amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general election.
Makinde disclosed the meeting in a brief post on his Facebook page, saying their discussions focused on key national issues as Nigeria prepares for the next general election.
“Earlier today, we visited Baba, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR in Abeokuta,” Makinde wrote.
“Our discussions centred on important national issues in view of the upcoming general election. We appreciate Baba for his wise counsel at this crucial time in our nation’s history.”
The meeting comes months after Makinde formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking at a joint rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Ibadan in May, the Oyo governor said, “the time to reset Nigeria is now.”
He argued that the country’s situation had “continued to deteriorate, putting the majority of Nigerians on survival mode on a daily basis,” while accusing public officials of failing in their responsibility to improve citizens’ welfare.
Makinde, who is expected to fly the APM’s presidential ticket, is projected to face President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who is seeking a second term, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Although Oyinlola is a member of the PDP and Fayemi belongs to the APC, the meeting has fuelled speculation over possible political alignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election, particularly in relation to Makinde’s ambition.

Obasanjo has yet to publicly endorse any presidential candidate for the 2027 election, although there has been speculation that he is sympathetic to Obi’s presidential bid.
The former president has also remained in the spotlight following his recent allegation that Atiku gave the late former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, N5 million to initiate impeachment proceedings against him during his first term in office.
Responding to the allegation, Atiku accused Obasanjo of attempting to rewrite history and making false claims against him to favour his preferred candidate ahead of the 2027 election.
