Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, has been released after two years of trial by the Beninese government. Igboho confirmed his release in a statement posted on his Instagram handle titled “My Release in Benin Republic.”
In his statement, he expressed gratitude to several individuals and groups for their support during his ordeal and in securing his release.
Sunday thanked former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, Professor Banji Akintoye, Ayo Adebanjo, and various traditional rulers for their roles in his release.
Sunday Igboho was arrested on July 19, 2021, by the International Criminal Police Organisation at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, Republic of Benin, while on his way to Germany.
Igboho arrest came after he fled Nigeria following a raid on his residence in Ibadan by the Department of State Service (DSS), which accused him of stockpiling arms.
He expressed his appreciation to President Talon of Benin Republic and members of his cabinet for their support. Igboho also thanked religious leaders, pastors, Muslim clerics, and traditional worshippers for their prayers.
He acknowledged the support of royal fathers, Obas, and Chiefs in Yoruba land and emphasized the need for their continued support to deliver the Yoruba land from what he referred to as slavery.
Sunday Igboho also expressed gratitude to various organizations, including the Megarally USA, Ilana Omo Oodua, and Igbega Omo Oodua USA and Canada, for their support throughout his ordeal.
This development marks a significant event in the ongoing Yoruba self-determination movement, and Igboho’s release is likely to be celebrated by his supporters.
