Media personality Toke Makinwa has explained that her controversial comments about dating a financially struggling man were intended as humour, following criticism from social media users.

The controversy began after Makinwa, speaking on her podcast, said she could not relate to women who financially support their partners. She also joked that if she were dating a man who earned ₦5,000, he would have to give her ₦3,000 or she would stop seeing him.

Her remarks quickly sparked reactions online, with many accusing her of placing too much emphasis on money in relationships.

Addressing the criticism in a post on her Instagram Story, Makinwa said the statement was taken out of context and should not be interpreted as her personal view on love.

“I’ve seen a comment I made jokingly being circulated and interpreted as a serious reflection of how I view love and relationships.

“For clarity, I have never believed that a person’s bank account should measure love or how much a man can give financially.”

She said she values relationships built on genuine affection, commitment and mutual support, regardless of financial circumstances.

“I respect and believe in the beauty of two people who genuinely love each other, work hard, support one another, and build a life together, regardless of their financial situation.

“Money should never be the sole foundation of love or determine the value of a relationship. Partnership, mutual respect, support and growing together matter far more.

“Sometimes a joke is a joke, banter, tongue-in-cheek.”
