The Super Falcons of Nigeria returned to winning ways at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), edging Zambia 1-0 in their second Group C match on Saturday in Rabat, Morocco.
An early strike from Asisat Oshoala secured all three points for the defending champions, who produced a determined performance despite playing with 10 players for more than half of the encounter.
Nigeria headed into the match at Al Madina Stadium looking to recover from their disappointing opening defeat to Malawi. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who came under heavy criticism after that result, had vowed the team would respond positively.
The Falcons made a bright start and went ahead in the eighth minute. Oshoala latched onto a long pass from midfield, outpaced two defenders and drove into the penalty area. Although her initial effort was saved by Zambian goalkeeper Hazel Nali, the rebound struck Oshoala before rolling into the net.
Nigeria’s task became more difficult in the 39th minute when Oluwatosin Demehin was sent off after a VAR review ruled that her challenge on Zambia captain Barbra Banda warranted a straight red card.
Reduced to 10 players, the Super Falcons were forced onto the defensive as Zambia dominated possession in search of an equaliser.

However, Nigeria remained organised at the back, with Nnadozie making a series of crucial saves to deny the Copper Queens. Tactical substitutions in the second half, including the introduction of Chinwendu Ihezuo, helped the team maintain its shape and withstand sustained pressure.
The victory breathed new life into Nigeria’s title defence after the opening setback against Malawi and moved the nine-time African champions back into contention for a place in the knockout stage.
The Super Falcons will round off their Group C campaign against Egypt, with qualification for the quarter-finals now firmly within reach.
