KAMPALA, UGANDA – Ugandan authorities have launched an investigation into the sudden death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, who tragically fell from the third floor of a shopping mall in Kampala.
The 29-year-old striker, who played for Vipers SC, reportedly fell from Voicemail Shopping Arcade in the early hours of Monday, February 26, 2025.
Circumstances Surrounding the Incident
Lawal had been visiting a Tanzanian friend residing in one of the residential apartments within the mall. According to Ugandan police, the friend stated that she had left him alone shortly before the fall.
“Authorities are retrieving CCTV footage and conducting thorough interrogations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” the police confirmed in a statement.
Vipers SC Mourns Lawal’s Passing
Vipers Sports Club, where Lawal had played since July 2022, expressed shock and grief over his death.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, club fans, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” the club’s statement read.
Lawal previously played for AS Kigali in Rwanda before joining Vipers SC in the Ugandan Premier League.
Nigeria’s Reaction & Calls for Investigation
The Nigerian government has called for a thorough probe into the footballer’s death. The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has also expressed concerns, urging Ugandan authorities to ensure transparency in the investigation.
As police continue their inquiry, many await answers regarding the mystery surrounding the footballer’s fall.
