Motorists using the Gbagada Expressway in Lagos experienced heavy traffic on Thursday following two separate accidents that disrupted movement along the busy route.
The first crash involved two heavy-duty trucks, while a second accident further along the expressway, around the Charlie Boy area, involved two trailers and five other vehicles.
The incidents caused a significant build-up of vehicles as officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) deployed personnel and recovery equipment to clear the affected sections.
At the first accident scene, one of the trucks had been removed from the road by the time of filing the report, while recovery operations continued for the second vehicle.
The second crash also attracted LASTMA officials, who had evacuated the five affected vehicles. A tow truck was subsequently deployed to remove the two trailers that remained on the road.
Speaking at the scene, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the agency had been working to restore normal traffic since early morning.
“As you can see, the major one here, all efforts is on ground to remove it. The first one has been removed about 45 minutes ago,” he said.
Bakare-Oki explained that the agency had deployed multiple pieces of heavy-duty equipment to facilitate the recovery operation.
“We have every equipment, a forklift, another two major tow trucks here. But we are trying to arrange another crane now. The arrangement is solid. We will put all hands on deck and ensure the vehicle is removed,” he said.

Providing an update on the second accident near Charlie Boy, the LASTMA boss said the vehicles involved had largely been cleared.
“There is another accident at the back by Charlie Boy involving two trailers and five vehicles. All five vehicles have been evacuated. A tow truck is at that spot too, about to remove the two tow trucks and the two trailers that are involved in the secondary accident,” he said.
The traffic management agency continued recovery operations as motorists were advised to exercise patience while the affected portions of the expressway were cleared.
