A heartbreaking incident in Bayelsa State has left the community in mourning after a woman known as Madam Stella admitted to pushing her six-year-old daughter, Rachel, into a river, leading to the child’s drowning.
The tragedy unfolded in the Ukubie community within the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa. Eyewitnesses revealed that Stella was searching for her daughter when she found Rachel playing by the riverside.
Despite the mother’s warnings for the child to stop playing with the water, Rachel continued, and in a moment of anger, Stella pushed her into the river, resulting in a fatal drowning.
Confronted by shocked community members, Madam Stella confessed to her actions, saying: “I regret my actions. I never knew it would happen this way.”
A family member, Jeph Nation, expressed his devastation over the loss, noting: “I have recorded two deaths already in my paternal family at Ukubie this year. All were painful and heart-touching, but this one was so pathetic.”
The incident has left many in the community and beyond grieving the loss of a young life, while also sparking discussions about the need for intervention and support for distressed families.
