President Bola Tinubu has criticised former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi over his handling of erosion challenges in the state, questioning his suitability for the presidency.
Tinubu made the remarks on Friday while addressing supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during a campaign rally in Akwa Ibom State.
Although he did not directly mention Obi’s name, the President referred to the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing him of avoiding the erosion problem in Anambra during his time as governor.
Tinubu contrasted Obi’s record with his experience in Lagos, claiming he successfully tackled the threat posed by the Atlantic Ocean.
“There is one who said he is in one party they call NDC, who is running for president. He ran away from erosion in Anambra State. And he said he want to be a president. Which president?
“He could not confront erosion. I, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I confronted the Atlantic Ocean, I tamed it for you. Governor Umo Eno confronted the erosion in Akwa Ibom and he is working for you, he is stable,” Tinubu said.
The President also criticised former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who is seeking the presidency on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), questioning his political consistency and leadership qualities.
Tinubu recalled Atiku’s long association with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), arguing that his departure from the party following internal disagreements raised questions about his ability to lead.
“They the opposition lack the leadership and character. If a man Atiku that once upon a time was a baby of the PDP, became a father of the PDP and, because of a little inconvenience, he ran away from that party and formed a dangerous ADC in another party. Is that a leadership trait? Is that a leadership character? And he wants you to vote for him. It is not for banana. He cannot put a house in order,” Tinubu said.
The President further dismissed opposition parties, describing them as lacking the quality of leadership and calibre of politicians within the ruling APC.

He praised former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and other party leaders for their contributions to maintaining unity within the ruling party.
“We are not like other mushroom parties. They don’t have the kind of character and the calibre of people that we have.
“You can roll down from the former chairman of our party, Umar Ganduje and many other characters here who have led and put together a united APC, people of great dependency, reliability and honesty,” Tinubu said.
