Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has said his time in custody will not weaken his commitment to continue advocating for justice in Nigeria.

Reacting after regaining freedom from Kuje Correctional Centre on Tuesday, Sowore shared a message on X where he reaffirmed his determination to continue his activism.

“Prison has never broken the resolve of those who fight for justice. If anything, it only strengthens our determination,” he wrote.

“The struggle continues. We will never surrender. #RevolutionNow #Sowore2027.”

Earlier on Tuesday, a Federal High Court in Abuja approved bail for Sowore in the sum of N200 million.

As part of the conditions, the court directed him to provide two sureties, including a traditional ruler from his community and another individual who owns landed property within the Federal Capital Territory.

The court also ordered him to submit his international passport to the registrar pending the conclusion of the case.

Following the ruling, the judge directed that Sowore be released into the custody of his legal team while arrangements were made to fulfil the bail conditions.

Sowore is being prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS) over a two-count charge linked to a social media post in which he allegedly referred to President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal” on his X and Facebook accounts.

The activist denied the allegations and entered a not guilty plea.

The court had initially granted him bail on self-recognition.

However, on June 16, the presiding judge withdrew the bail and issued a warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear in court.

According to the court, a request submitted on his behalf seeking adjournment did not provide sufficient reasons for his absence.

On June 22, the court ordered that Sowore be remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application challenging the cancellation of his bail.

The court also rejected an application filed by Sowore asking the judge to step aside from the case over allegations of bias.
