Stella Okafor has responded to criticism surrounding the sale of properties belonging to her late husband, John Okafor, insisting the decision was collectively made to cover burial expenses.

Speaking in an interview with content creator King Mitchy, Stella stated that she and two of the late actor’s sons, Valentine and Daniel Okafor, agreed to sell land in Enugu to raise funds.

According to her: “Before they sold the land, we were still in the village, and they (the children and family) were arguing with me over the money they gave me during the burial. They insisted that I must share the money with them. I told them the money was for my children. The money was N500,000.

That land that was sold in Enugu, three of us sold that land because of the burial. It was N17 million. Go and ask the children.

We (my husband’s sons sold his house). I am not the one who sold the house. We sold the house.”

Her comments come amid public reactions to her recent appeal for support, where she disclosed that the household had been without electricity for two months and that her children had been sent home over unpaid school fees. Reports indicated that the appeal attracted more than N7 million in donations.

However, Somtochukwu Okafor disputed her claims of hardship and alleged that multiple family assets had already been sold after the actor’s death.

Actor Tenkobo also criticised Stella, accusing her of using the late actor’s memory to attract financial support.

The controversy intensified after a woman identifying herself as Mr Ibu’s first wife accused Stella of mishandling family finances and making decisions without broader family consent. She alleged that properties, including land in Enugu and a house in Lagos, were sold without proper consultation.

Reacting to those accusations, Stella maintained that she was unaware her husband had children from an earlier relationship before they got married.

She said: “My husband never told me that he was married before. Even the first son, I keep seeing him in the house. My husband never for one day told me that he was his son. Even in marriage with him, he impregnated a lady who gave birth to twins.”
