Tragedy struck in Lagos as a reckless driver, yet to be identified, fatally struck a 12-year-old girl and left her 15-year-old sister critically injured while speeding on the BRT lane along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, the incident occurred on Monday, February 24, 2025, at Ogundare bus stop.

How the Tragedy Unfolded

“At about 3:35 pm, a driver, while recklessly plying the BRT lane at high speed, ran into two female pedestrians—siblings aged 12 and 15—as they were returning from school,” the police statement read.

The victims sustained severe injuries and were immediately rushed to Orile-Agege General Hospital. Unfortunately, the 12-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries, while her 15-year-old sister was transferred to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) for further medical care.

Lagos CP Orders Investigation

Reacting to the heartbreaking incident, the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.

“The Commissioner of Police commiserates with the bereaved family and assures that the police will conduct a speedy and conclusive investigation to bring the culprit to justice,” the statement added.

The police also urged motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, speed limits, and safe driving practices to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
