After sweeping plaques at the last Headies Awards, it seems singing sensation, Simi, will be dragged to court for intellectual property theft!
Her hit song, which she released in 2017, “Joromi” has pitched her against veteran musician, Sir Victor Uwaifo.
It may be recalled that Sir Victor Uwaifo released a song which soared in his time, titled, “Joromi.”
It became a hit and was recognised by all in 1969.
But he has now cried out that the song has become a victim of intellectual property theft as Simi failed to give credit to him when she released her own version in 2017
Uwaifo, during an interview with SaharaReporters, made the shocking revelation at the Annual General Meeting of Copyright Society of Nigeria COSON, in Lagos
The former commissioner for arts and culture in Edo State described copyright and Intellectual property theft as a very serious issue in Nigeria, saying it must be dealt with urgently as it is reducing the creativity of the new generation of musicians.
Uwaifo noted that the process of making music has now significantly changed from what it used to be in his time, as “more mediocres” are now in the game.
This is coming just a few days after her rumoured boyfriend, Adekunle Gold called out Nollywood producers on social media for using his song in a low budget movie without his consent
