A powerful storm swept through Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, Canada, leaving widespread flooding, damaged infrastructure and several road closures after heavy rainfall and strong winds hit the city.
According to City News, the storm struck at about 8 p.m. on Friday, uprooting trees, damaging traffic signal poles and flooding recreation centres and other public facilities, causing major disruptions to transportation and municipal services.
Among the roads affected, Yellowhead Trail beneath the CN overpass at 82 Street remained closed on Saturday as crews continued efforts to drain floodwaters. Authorities also shut a Whitemud Drive off-ramp between 170 Street and 178 Street because of road damage, while lane restrictions remained in place on 111 Avenue near 158 Street and 118 Avenue near 149 Street.
The City of Edmonton said maintenance crews, working alongside EPCOR, were clearing debris, inspecting damaged infrastructure and carrying out repairs in the affected areas.
City officials urged motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to remain cautious when travelling through locations impacted by the storm.
Several public facilities also suspended operations following the severe weather. Telus World of Science, Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre, and the Heritage Amphitheatre remained closed on Saturday, while flooding forced the closure of the main swimming pool at the Grand Trunk Fitness and Leisure Centre.

The Commonwealth Recreation Centre, which temporarily shut down on Friday evening, resumed operations after conditions improved.
Officials also reported damage to LRT crossing arms, flooded walkways and isolated flooding at ongoing construction sites.
Residents have been encouraged to monitor updates on affected facilities and report storm-related damage to public property through the city’s 311 service.
