Security operatives in Kogi State have thwarted an attempted terrorist attack in Ikoyi community, Ijumu Local Government Area, preventing what authorities described as a planned mass abduction.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by Kingsley Fanwo, the state commissioner for information and communication, the incident occurred around 7pm on Saturday when armed men invaded the community.
Fanwo said the attackers reportedly targeted a gathering in the area with the aim of abducting residents and causing widespread panic.
He explained that personnel of the Nigerian military, police, Kogi State Vigilante Service, and local hunters responded swiftly after receiving a distress call, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire with the assailants.
“Their rapid intervention denied the bandits the opportunity to execute their mission, leading to a fierce gun battle that forced the criminals to abandon their plans and flee,” the statement said.
The state government confirmed that no residents were kidnapped during the attack.
However, it noted that one member of the Tiv community lost his life during the confrontation, while another person sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving medical attention.
Authorities also said intelligence reports suggested that some of the attackers may have been wounded before escaping into nearby forests.

“Security agencies have since launched a manhunt and are currently tracking the fleeing criminals,” the statement added.
The government urged residents to remain alert and report individuals with suspicious gunshot wounds or anyone seeking treatment for firearm-related injuries.
Fanwo praised the coordinated response of security operatives, saying it demonstrated the effectiveness of the state’s security architecture and collaboration among agencies.
He also commended the role of local vigilantes and hunters in providing intelligence support and rapid response during the operation.
The commissioner reiterated the government’s directive on security compliance, including restrictions on unauthorized gatherings in vulnerable areas and at sensitive hours.
He assured residents that the government remains committed to supporting security agencies while calling on the public to continue providing credible intelligence to help prevent future attacks.
