When wife of the president, Senator Oluremi Tinubu launched the ‘Oluremi at 65 Education Fund’ a scheme launched to mark her 65th birthday, mockers took to social media to malign the image of the First Lady. But she insisted that instead of gifts and public messages, she wanted well-wishers to contribute to the project.  Today, they have garnered over N20bn for the National Library project

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has announced that more than N20 billion has been raised for the National Library project in Abuja.

Mrs Tinubu disclosed this on Tuesday during an interactive session with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa.

She said the amount was realised through the “Oluremi at 65 Education Fund,” a scheme launched to mark her 65th birthday on Saturday.

Instead of gifts and public messages, she had asked well-wishers to contribute to the project.

She explained that the Federal Ministry of Education is coordinating the fund.

According to her, the completion of the National Library would serve as a lasting legacy, adding that her motivation was a commitment to the country and not politics.

Mrs Tinubu recalled that as a senator, she was a member of the Senate committee on education and observed the ministry’s inability to complete the library.

She also noted that the project, initiated during the Shehu Shagari administration, has remained uncompleted for decades.

She stated that libraries played a key role in her early development and urged Nigerians to embrace the spirit of contributing to the nation’s progress.

The First Lady said individuals, organisations and communities have continued to donate to the fund and that contributions exceeding N20 billion have been collected so far.
