Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has waded into the ongoing rift between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, calling for a transparent and unbiased investigation.

In a statement issued via his official X page on Saturday, Saraki emphasized the need to prioritize the protection of the Senate as an institution rather than focusing on individual interests.
“This situation saddens me because of its negative impact on the integrity, sanctity, image, and public perception of the institution,” he said.
Saraki urged all parties involved, including their supporters, to be mindful of their actions and ensure they do not tarnish the Senate’s reputation. He stressed that the constitution, Senate rules, and parliamentary conventions must be followed in resolving the matter.
Calls for Transparent Probe
The former Senate President advocated for an open investigation by the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, stating that such a process is necessary to determine the veracity of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations against Akpabio.
“At this point, with the public claims made by the Senator, the right measure to take is to institute an open, transparent, and honest investigation,” he said, adding that both parties must fully cooperate with the committee.
Saraki recalled a similar situation during his tenure when he was accused of importing an official car without paying customs duty. He noted that he voluntarily submitted to an investigation, which ultimately proved the allegations against him were false.
“This is a precedent that the leadership of the 10th Senate should follow,” he advised.
Senate Must Not Condone Misconduct
Saraki warned that failure to properly address the issue could damage the Senate’s credibility, stating that the institution must not be perceived as condoning sexual harassment, gender bias, abuse of office, or disregard for parliamentary rules.
While clarifying that he was not taking sides, Saraki reiterated that a proper investigation would help safeguard the Senate’s reputation.
“For me, the institution of the Senate is so important, sacred, and pre-eminent. All lovers of democracy should always work to strengthen it,” he concluded.
