The Oyo State Police Command has apprehended a suspected armed robber and recovered a motorcycle allegedly stolen from a commercial rider during an attack in the Apata area of Ibadan.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the command said the arrest followed information provided by a concerned resident, who alerted officers that a commercial motorcyclist, Muhammadu Kamilu, had been assaulted by a passenger.
According to the police, the suspect allegedly struck the rider with an iron hammer before fleeing with his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle.
Following the report, operatives of the command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) launched an operation that led to the arrest of the suspect, identified as Shafiu Nuhu.
The police also recovered the stolen Bajaj Boxer motorcycle with registration number AJW 842 QU, as well as the iron hammer allegedly used during the attack.
The command said the victim sustained injuries, while a passerby, Nathaniel Ibrahim, who attempted to assist him during the incident, was also injured.
Both men were taken to a nearby hospital, where they received treatment.
During questioning, the suspect allegedly admitted to carrying out robberies alone and targeting commercial motorcyclists in Ibadan and surrounding areas.
“Investigation is ongoing to determine his possible involvement in other similar criminal activities and to recover any additional exhibits connected to his operations,” the command said.
