PDP Governors Convene Amid Escalating Internal Crisis

Governors who were elected on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform will gather today in Abuja for an emergency meeting to discuss the condition of the party and the country as the internal crisis in the main opposition party continues.

The party’s pre- and post-election problems was not resolved in an expanded gathering of leaders and stakeholders convened last month at its national office. The party warned attendees not to assign blame for the results of the general elections in 2023 at that conference.

The leadership has already met with stakeholders to settle the ongoing dispute, and the acting national chairman, Umar Damagum, said that today’s meeting is a step toward reconciliation.

Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, the head of the PDP Governors’ Forum, has called the meeting. The meeting is set to take place in the Akwa Ibom Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, and is anticipated to be attended by all 13 governors of the party.

According to a statement from the Director General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, C.I.D. Maduabum, the meeting would also cover the status of the country, particularly recent political, social, and economic events.

“The gathering will discuss the Forum’s current situation, the party’s, and the role of governors in preserving PDP and the country. Additionally, the summit may see the Forum’s new leadership reveal its unifying and progressive agenda, Maduabum said.

Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, was chosen vice chairman in June, and this is the Forum’s first gathering since Mohammed assumed that position.

Meanwhile, the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and national caucus for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have been moved to next week’s Tuesday and Wednesday. This occurred when Abdullahi Adamu, the party’s national leader, received strong support from the forum of state APC chairmen.

The prior timetable for the parley called for it to take place yesterday through today. The postponement was required, according to Iyiola Omisore, national secretary of the APC, because of President Bola Tinubu’s commitments as the new chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and his regional and sub-regional schedule.

This comes as President Tinubu, who spent the previous two days in Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau, where he took part in the proceedings of the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, has just arrived back in Abuja. At around 6:30 p.m., the NAF 001 Boeing 737 carrying President Tinubu landed at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

Adamu reportedly invited APC state chairmen to inform them on his stewardship yesterday in an effort to soothe simmering anger within the party. A few days after meeting with governors, Adamu spoke during the parley’s inaugural session and asked President Tinubu for political favors for party members.

Adamu said the meeting was crucial because the party chairmen “bear the brunt” in their respective states while urging them to alert the National Working Committee (NWC) to any difficulties either in their states or at the federal level.

Adamu caused a ruckus when he detached the NWC from the selection of principal officers in both houses of the National Assembly during a meeting with governors last week. The NWC had been enraged over his unwillingness to additionally give an audited report of the party’s financials for the previous year.

Additionally, there have been rumors that certain party members, notably those from the Southwest, have compiled a list of Adamu’s “sins” in an effort to win the President’s support for his ouster.

Yesterday, it was revealed that the APC governors will also be convening today to discuss the current situation of the party in advance of the rescheduled National Caucus and NEC sessions.

Alphonsus Ogar, the chairman of the Cross River state APC branch, criticized the idea that the NEC meeting was postponed because of the party’s issue. Ogar reiterated the forum’s faith in the Adamu-led NWC while speaking on behalf of the APC Chairmen Forum.

“There’s nothing like that if you have been following Mr. President’s itinerary; he is not currently in the country and is anticipated to leave on another journey,” he added. NWC fully notified us of this reason, which made the postponement necessary. There is only one APC, and we returned in unity to reiterate our support for the NWC and our national chairman.

Regarding their alleged influence over appointments to boards and agencies of the government, he asserted: “That is complete rumor because, regardless of what you may have heard about board membership, those letters were addressed to state chairmen, and every state chairman is loyal to his governor, and where there is no governor, they are loyal to the stakeholders.

There is no such crisis, and we should applaud the president for keeping his word when he said that state chairmen should be the leaders of their states. I can also guarantee you that letters were sent to us.

Adamu had earlier expressed confidence that President Tinubu will undoubtedly lead the party in the selection of leaders of government agencies in the days to come.

“Every APC member has an inherent right to hope to receive some favor,” he continued. And here, we can all acquire one. We are all unable to serve as government ministers. We cannot all become directors, board members, or parastatals and MDAs for the entire nation.
