Segun Olowookere, an Osun State resident sentenced to death by hanging in 2010 for stealing a fowl and eggs, has regained his freedom after being pardoned by Governor Ademola Adeleke.

On December 26, Adeleke granted clemency to 53 convicts, including Mr Olowookere, as part of a series of pardons.

Olowookere’s case gained attention following a viral interview by actress Biola Adebayo in which his parents alleged wrongful arrest and police extortion.

According to his father Olanrewaju, a divisional police officer demanded money for Olowookere’s release but their inability to pay led to his imprisonment.

In a video shared on Monday, Biola was seen with Olowookere outside Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison in Lagos, expressing gratitude to the Osun governor for the pardon.

“This is Segun Olowookere, we’re just leaving Kirikiri. He is finally out of the correctional centre. Thank you so much for the love and support that we got,” the actress said.

She also commended Olowookere’s good behaviour during his incarceration, stating, “The testimonies at the correctional centre were amazing. We are glad he is out now for good.”
