First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has called on Nigerians to minimise food waste and embrace environmentally sustainable habits as part of efforts to keep communities clean and healthy.
She made the appeal in a message commemorating the 2026 World Cleanup Day, marked on Sunday with the theme, “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities.”
Tinubu said the emphasis on food waste was timely, particularly amid challenges such as climate change and conflicts that continue to affect food production and distribution globally.
“This year’s focus on food waste is particularly important at a time when climate change, conflicts, and other global challenges continue to disrupt food production and supply,” she said.
The First Lady encouraged Nigerians to pay greater attention to their habits around food, from purchasing and preparation to consumption and storage.
She also urged households, businesses and communities to improve waste disposal practices and adopt measures that would help safeguard the environment.

“I encourage households, businesses, and communities to reduce food waste, dispose of refuse properly, and adopt more sustainable practices that protect our environment,” she added.
Tinubu stressed that maintaining cleaner communities would require shared responsibility, noting that individual and collective actions could help create a healthier environment for future generations.
“Through our collective efforts, we can build cleaner, healthier communities for present and future generations,” she said.
