The Director-General of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Campaign Council, Ibrahim Abdulkarim, has dismissed reports that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is exhausted from campaign activities.
Abdulkarim disclosed that the former Anambra State governor recently travelled to the United States for a two-day meeting before returning to Nigeria to continue his political engagements.
He made this known in an interview with TheCable on Wednesday, describing claims about Obi’s exhaustion as false.
The clarification followed remarks by Sam Omale, Deputy Spokesperson of the NDC Campaign Council, who had earlier said the presidential candidate was experiencing exhaustion after a demanding campaign schedule.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Omale explained that Obi had been advised to take some time off following several trips between cities and multiple political engagements.
He was responding to concerns about the candidate’s health after a recent rally in Enugu, where Obi reportedly indicated that he would take a break from campaign activities.
Omale, however, maintained that the former governor was in good health and that his exhaustion would not disrupt his campaign.
‘OPPOSITION PEDDLING DISINFORMATION’
Countering the reports, Abdulkarim said Obi’s recent activities included a trip to Washington, a meeting with party candidates in Lagos and a town hall engagement in Calabar, Cross River State.
He explained that the US trip was deliberately kept private to prevent people from arranging appointments with the presidential candidate during his visit.
“He travelled. He left for the US for a two-day meeting. We didn’t announce it because we don’t want people in the US to start booking meetings to see him,” he said.
Abdulkarim added that Obi returned to Nigeria and met with some NDC candidates in Lagos before travelling to Calabar for another political engagement.

“And we need him to come back and go for another campaign in Calabar today. So, he went in quietly and had a meeting in Washington.
“He came back and had a meeting with candidates in Lagos yesterday evening. Now, he is in Calabar doing a town hall meeting.
“Is that the person you said is exhausted? It’s just a pure lie. It’s those in opposition that are peddling the disinformation.”
The campaign director-general’s remarks also followed a post on X by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, in which he mocked Obi over reports of his exhaustion.
