Oyo town witnessed a historic moment on Monday, January 13, 2025, as Governor Seyi Makinde presented Oba Akeem Owoade with the instrument and staff of office, officially crowning him the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.

This comes nearly three years after the passing of Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi, who ruled the ancient town for 52 years.
The late Oba Adeyemi passed away on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83. His reign was the longest in Oyo’s history. The appointment of his successor, however, has been fraught with intrigues, political undercurrents, and legal battles between the state government and the kingmakers, the Oyomesi.
The process became a contentious issue when the Oyomesi, led by High Chief Yusuf Akinade (Basorun of Oyo), selected Prince Lukman Gbadegesin as Alaafin-elect while the state government has picked Oba Akeem Owoade was their Alaafin Elect.
Governor Makinde rejected the decision, citing allegations of bribery within the selection process, and vowed that the revered stool of Alaafin would not go to the “highest bidder.

Reports indicated that some kingmakers allegedly received bribes to influence their decision, prompting the involvement of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Two kingmakers later sided with the government, leading to a fresh selection process and the eventual emergence of Oba Akeem Owoade.
During the presentation ceremony, Governor Makinde reaffirmed his commitment to transparency, stating that he had no prior relationship with the new Alaafin (Oba Akeem Owoade) and that his administration prioritized fairness over political or personal interests.
Makinde warned against attempts to destabilize the traditional institution and pledged that those found guilty of bribery during the selection process would face prosecution unless forgiven by the new monarch.
He described the Alaafin’s stool as a vital symbol of unity for the Yoruba race and prayed for peace and development under Oba Owoade’s reign.
The governor also announced that the coronation ceremony would be held in four weeks.

Oba Owoade, a seasoned professional with a background in engineering and entrepreneurship, previously held roles in Canada and Scotland and has been actively involved in philanthropy both in Nigeria and abroad.
In his response, the new Alaafin expressed gratitude to the governor, Oyomesi, and others who facilitated his ascension. He pledged to work for the unity and progress of Oyo town, Oyo State, and the Yoruba race.
Following the presentation of the staff of the office, the new monarch was escorted to Oyo town amidst fanfare, with residents welcoming him with drumming, spiritual rites, and celebrations.
Oba Owoade’s ascension marks the beginning of a new chapter in Oyo’s history. However, the days ahead will reveal whether the grievances of some Oyomesi members, who have expressed dissatisfaction with the process, will resurface.
