The Department of State Services (DSS) has approved a request by lawyers of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu to visit him, one of his lawyers said.

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Mr Kanu’s lead counsel, announced this in a tweet on Friday, two days after the request was filed.

“Thankfully our effort is yielding the desired result, We have just received a communication approving Our visit to Our Client- Mazi Nnamdi  Kanu,” he said, promising to give an update after the meeting.

Mr Kanu was presented before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday without legal representation.

The IPOB leader, who jumped bail in 2017, told the court that he fled the country because his life was in danger after the military invaded his hometown in Abia State.

He said if he had not escaped, he might have been killed like other members of the group.

Justice Binta Nyako said Kanu is to be remanded in DSS custody till July 26 pending the determination of his trial.

Kanu was first arrested on October 14, 2015, and arraigned on 11-count charges bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, managing an unlawful society, publication of defamatory matter, illegal possession of firearms and improper importation of goods, among others.
