Nigerians were left in darkness on Saturday, January 11, 2024, as the National Power Grid collapsed at 1:56 pm.

Nigerians Plunged Into Darkness As National Grid Collapses Again

This marks the first grid failure of 2024, continuing a trend of instability that saw the National Power Grid suffer 12 collapses in 2023.

Data from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org) confirmed the incident, but the exact cause of the collapse remains undisclosed as of press time.

The frequent grid failures have been a major concern for Nigerians, compounding the country’s existing energy challenges.

The collapse comes amidst growing concerns over electricity debt, with Nigerians reportedly owing a staggering ₦349 billion in unpaid electricity bills within nine months.

Authorities are yet to provide details on the timeline for restoring power or measures to prevent further collapses.

Meanwhile, many Nigerians have turned to alternative energy sources to mitigate the impact of these recurring failures.
