The Nigerian Armed Forces have introduced stringent regulations prohibiting personnel from engaging in homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, cross-dressing, tattoos, and other behaviors considered unethical for military personnel.

The directives are part of the revised Harmonised Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service, which President Bola Tinubu signed into effect on December 16, 2024.
Key Provisions in the Revised Code:
- Prohibited Behaviors:
Military personnel are expressly barred from homosexuality, LGBTQIA2S+ activities, body piercings, and tattoos. Disorderly behavior, brawling, and drunkenness—whether on or off duty—are also forbidden. - Amorous Relationships:
Relationships with subordinates or their spouses are strictly prohibited. - Financial and Legal Obligations:
Officers must ensure timely payment of dues, including vehicle licensing and insurance. Issuing dud cheques is deemed a serious offense. - Political and Secret Society Affiliations:
Membership in political parties or secret societies is banned. Cultural or traditional societies, however, are exempt from this restriction. - Private Business and Use of Government Resources:
Officers are prohibited from engaging in private businesses or using government property, name, or position for personal or commercial gain. Accepting gifts or favors from juniors is also disallowed.
Implications:
While the updated terms clearly define prohibited acts, the document does not specify the disciplinary measures for violations.
This move is seen as part of the military’s effort to uphold discipline and professionalism within the ranks.
However, it is likely to draw mixed reactions due to its stance on certain personal and social behaviors.
