Nigeria Governors’ Forum Meets Amid Controversy Over Tax Reform Bills

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) convened an in-person meeting at its Secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday night, with 15 governors, predominantly from the All Progressives Congress (APC), in attendance.

Notably, opposition governors Alex Otti of Abia State (Labour Party) and Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State (All Progressives Grand Alliance) were also present.

While the meeting’s agenda was not disclosed to journalists, it comes amidst mounting controversy surrounding new tax reform bills proposed by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The bills have faced significant backlash from various quarters, including the 36 state governors under the National Economic Council (NEC), who have raised concerns over the reforms.

Northern governors of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum have been particularly vocal, collectively rejecting parts of the bills and urging their withdrawal from the National Assembly.

The outcome of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum meeting remains to be seen as the debate over the contentious reforms continues to unfold.
