NFF Appoints Éric Sékou Chelle As Super Eagles Head Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed the appointment of Éric Sékou Chelle, former Mali national team coach, as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

The announcement, made on Tuesday, marks Éric Sékou Chelle as the third coach to take charge of the team since José Peseiro’s resignation in March 2024.

According to an NFF statement, the decision followed a recommendation by the Technical and Development Sub-Committee and was ratified by the Executive Committee.

Éric Sékou Chelle’s immediate assignment includes overseeing Nigeria’s campaign at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) from February 1-28, held across Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau emphasized the importance of continuity, noting that Chelle’s CHAN role will allow him to identify home-based talents for potential inclusion in the senior national team.

“We want whoever takes charge to start immediately,” Gusau said. “Managing the CHAN Eagles is a chance to assess and integrate local talents into the senior team.”

Éric Sékou Chelle, a former Mali international with five caps, brings significant experience, having managed clubs like GS Consolat and FC Martigues, as well as Mali’s national team.

Under his leadership, Mali narrowly missed a semi-final spot in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, losing 2-1 to eventual champions Ivory Coast after extra time.

The Super Eagles’ immediate challenges include improving their position in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where they currently sit fifth in their group.

Chelle’s appointment is seen as a crucial step toward revitalizing the team and achieving success on both continental and global stages.
