The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has alerted the public to the presence of unregistered and suspected counterfeit toothpaste products being circulated in parts of the country.

In a notice shared on Sunday, the agency disclosed that its Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate received a complaint about the sale of the products in Kaduna State, which led to an immediate investigation.

During an inspection, NAFDAC officials discovered two suspected fake products labelled “Coglaet ActivGel 100g” and “Coglaet Herbal 100g” at a retail outlet.

“The shop owner informed the team that the products were purchased from a door-to-door sales representative; however, no proof of purchase was provided.

“These products have not met the required regulatory standards for registration and quality assurance, thereby posing a potential risk to public health and safety,” the agency said.

According to NAFDAC, the products—also identified as “Coglaet Crema Dental Herbal 100g” and “Coglaet ActivGel 100g”—do not carry batch numbers or valid registration details.

They were labelled as being manufactured by a Chinese company, Guangzhou YECAI Oral Cleaning Products Co., Ltd, with production dates listed as August 2025 and expiry dates as August 2029.

The agency confirmed that the suspected counterfeit items have been removed from circulation while efforts are ongoing to trace those responsible for their distribution.

NAFDAC also directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to strengthen surveillance nationwide to ensure the products are completely withdrawn from the market.

It advised consumers, distributors, and retailers to remain vigilant by checking product authenticity and physical condition before purchase or use.

The agency further urged members of the public to report any suspected counterfeit or substandard products to the nearest NAFDAC office or through its official communication channels.
