The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says it has stepped up search and recovery operations following the crash of its ATR-42 aircraft, with tail number NGR 931, in Igbokoda, the headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The aircraft crashed into a swampy area on October 5 with 22 passengers and three crew members on board. No survivors have been found.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed that a specialised Aircraft Accident Investigation Board had been established to investigate the incident, determine its causes and recommend measures to prevent similar occurrences.

Ejodame said the Chief of the Air Staff, Sunday Aneke, had ordered continuous search and recovery operations alongside a comprehensive investigation into the crash.

“Air Vice Marshal EOE Ebiowe, Head of the Investigation and Recovery Team, is coordinating the wider response, while Air Vice Marshal FO Ankeli serves as President of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Board,” the statement reads.

He explained that the arrangement was designed to ensure that recovery efforts and the investigation proceeded in a coordinated manner.

“This arrangement ensures a coordinated approach to recovery operations alongside a structured, specialist investigation into the circumstances of the accident.

“The 12-member Board comprises experienced personnel with specialist expertise in aviation operations, flight safety, piloting, air traffic control, aircraft engineering, maintenance, medical services and other relevant technical disciplines.

“It also includes representatives of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), bringing additional civilian aviation expertise to the process.

“This multidisciplinary composition is intended to support a thorough, objective and credible investigation guided by established aviation safety procedures,” the statement added.

According to Ejodame, the board will examine possible operational, technical, environmental, human and organisational factors that may have contributed to the accident.

Its work will include gathering, documenting and preserving relevant evidence to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash and identify both its immediate and underlying causes.

The investigation will also cover the emergency response, including search and rescue activities, medical assistance, recovery operations and the handling of the crash site.

Ejodame said the board would make recommendations based on its findings to address any identified deficiencies, strengthen aviation safety and reduce the risk of similar accidents.

He added that the involvement of civilian aviation safety specialists would promote technical cooperation, independent professional scrutiny and accountability throughout the process.

The NAF spokesperson also disclosed that the service was engaging with the victims’ families and providing administrative assistance to support them during the difficult period.

According to him, a dedicated helpline had been established at NAF headquarters under the Directorate of Veterans Affairs to provide information and respond to enquiries from the recorded next of kin (NOKs) of those involved in the crash.

He said the authorities were also arranging meetings with affected families and putting additional support measures in place to assist them as they grieve.

The Air Force reiterated its commitment to keeping the public informed as verified details emerge from the ongoing operations and investigation.

“The NAF recognises the public’s legitimate interest in the ongoing process and remains committed to providing appropriate updates as verified information becomes available,” Ejodame said.

“While ensuring responsible communication, the service will protect sensitive investigative information and preserve the integrity of the proceedings.

“Conclusions regarding the cause of the accident would be premature until the investigation is completed and its findings are duly considered.”
