The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has cautioned children, teenagers and young adults against using roller shoes and other footwear fitted with concealed or retractable wheels on public roads.
The warning was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by LASTMA Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, who said the growing use of the footwear on roads meant for motorised traffic was creating avoidable safety risks.
Taofiq said some users glide alongside moving vehicles, cross roads without proper caution and weave through traffic without protective equipment or adult supervision.
He explained that public highways are constantly shared by motorists, motorcyclists and pedestrians, making them inappropriate for recreational activities involving wheeled devices.
According to him, skating on such roads can make it harder for users to respond quickly when vehicles make unexpected movements, thereby increasing the possibility of collisions and serious injuries.
LASTMA advised parents, guardians, schools and caregivers to prevent children and other vulnerable road users from using roller shoes on highways, expressways, bridges, service lanes and other roads where vehicles operate.
The agency urged those interested in skating activities to use designated recreational spaces, private compounds and other locations considered safe for such activities.
It also advised users to wear appropriate protective equipment, including helmets, knee pads and elbow pads, when skating.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, stressed the importance of remaining alert and disciplined while using public roads.
Taofiq quoted Bakare-Oki as saying that protecting human life should remain the priority, adding that recreational activities should not put people in situations where they could face unnecessary danger.

The authority also appealed to motorists to drive carefully around children and young people using wheeled footwear, particularly within residential estates, neighbourhoods and school zones.
Members of the public were further encouraged to report dangerous traffic situations, road obstructions, accidents, broken-down vehicles and other emergencies requiring immediate attention through LASTMA’s toll-free short code, 3367.
The agency said prompt reports would enable relevant responders to intervene quickly and contribute to safer road use across Lagos.
