The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service says it has commenced an investigation into the cause of the fire that broke out at the Bono Energy Terminal in the Coconut area of Apapa, Lagos.
Earlier on Friday, the agency confirmed that firefighters had been deployed to tackle the incident.
Providing an update, the Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, disclosed that the blaze was completely extinguished at about 2 p.m.
According to her, the fire started around noon and involved a five-million-litre storage tank containing Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
She said emergency crews were dispatched immediately after the distress call and successfully contained the fire without any loss of life.
“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has successfully extinguished a fire involving a storage tank at the Bono Energy Terminal, located within the Ibru Jetty Complex along the Apapa–Oworonshoki Expressway, by Coconut Bus Stop, Olodi Apapa, Lagos.
“The emergency was reported at 12:04 p.m. on Friday, July 3, 2026. Firefighters from the Ajegunle, Sari Iganmu, and Isolo Fire Stations responded immediately and arrived at the scene at 12:16 hours. The incident involved a 5-million-litre Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) storage tank, which was engulfed in flames,” she said.
Adeseye credited the rapid response of firefighters and other emergency teams for preventing the fire from spreading to nearby facilities.

“Through the swift, coordinated, and professional efforts of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, working alongside emergency response teams from neighbouring oil and gas facilities, the fire was successfully brought under control and completely extinguished by 13:54 hours.
“The prompt intervention prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining tanks and critical infrastructure, thereby minimising potential losses. No casualty was recorded,” she added.
She further stated that investigators are working to determine what triggered the incident.
“The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and is currently under investigation,” Adeseye said.
The fire incident came just hours after emergency responders averted another potential disaster in Lagos by containing a leaking Liquefied Petroleum Gas tanker at Owode Elede, inward Onirin, along Ikorodu Road.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said the tanker developed a fault in the early hours of Friday, but the situation was brought under control without any casualties.
