Daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-senator for Ogun Central, Iyabo Obasanjo, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the party leadership of disrespect, exclusion and poor treatment.
In a resignation letter dated May 31 and addressed to the Ogun State APC Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, Obasanjo criticised the process that produced Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the party’s governorship consensus candidate for the 2027 election.
The US-based Associate Professor of Epidemiology alleged that the consensus arrangement did not follow due process and sidelined her from key consultations despite her participation in the race.
She further claimed that her supporters were prevented from accessing the venue where Adeola was announced as the consensus candidate, adding that she was not properly acknowledged during the selection process.
According to her, she initially agreed to abide by the party’s decision in the interest of unity and publicly accepted Adeola’s emergence.
Obasanjo said the senator later reached out to her and met with her supporters, where three requests were presented. She added that although she informed her supporters the requests were not mandatory, Adeola allegedly failed to respond to them months after the meeting.
“This is just part of the general treatment I have received from APC — disrespect and rejection as if I was not there, making contributions that increased support for the party in Ogun Central and across the state.
“A famous person once said that when disrespect is the only dish served, then one should leave the table. I am therefore leaving the APC table where I am not welcome. This is my resignation from the party,” she said.

Despite her grievances, she expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, Chief Yemi Sanusi and other APC leaders in Ogun Central for their support during her time in the party.
Reacting to her exit, the Ogun State APC said it would review the situation before issuing an official response, according to the party’s spokesperson, Femi Nubar.
“The party’s stance will be made public after appraisal of the senator’s decision to quit the party,” he said.
Also reacting, the media aide to Senator Solomon Adeola, Chief Kayode Odunaro, said the senator’s camp wished her well in her future political journey, noting that she may not be fully aware of developments surrounding the requests she referenced.
Obasanjo, a former Ogun State Commissioner for Health and senator between 2007 and 2011, recently returned to active politics after registering with the APC earlier this year in Ibogun, Ifo Local Government Area.
Her return had generated attention after billboards promoting her governorship ambition surfaced across Abeokuta ahead of the 2027 elections.
