The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general elections.

The decision was taken on Friday during a meeting between the commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), where key electoral preparations and related issues were reviewed.

In a statement issued by National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, INEC confirmed the development.

“Following deliberations, the commission resolved to postpone the exercise until after the 2027 general election,” the statement read.

INEC explained that the voter revalidation exercise is an important part of its responsibility to maintain a credible and updated National Register of Voters. According to the commission, the process is designed to verify voter information, correct errors in personal data, remove duplicates or ineligible records, and strengthen the integrity of the voter database.

It added that the exercise would also give registered voters the opportunity to review and update their details where necessary.

Despite the postponement, INEC reaffirmed its commitment to credible elections, stating that it “remains committed to the conduct of free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections.”

In a separate letter dated April 4, the commission had instructed all Resident Electoral Commissioners to suspend publicity and preparatory activities for the exercise.

The letter, signed by its Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, directed RECs to begin preliminary arrangements such as sourcing personnel and preparing INEC Voter Enrolment Devices, but to hold off on full implementation.

“RECs are also directed to step down all publicity and arrangements for the voter revalidation exercise and await further directives from the commission,” the notice stated.

INEC also expressed regret over any inconvenience caused by the adjustment and assured stakeholders of timely communication regarding future steps.

The commission had earlier planned to commence the nationwide voter revalidation exercise on April 13, 2026, as part of preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
