The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the schedule for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
According to the timetable, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will take place on February 20, 2027, while the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027.
The announcement was made on Friday in Abuja by the commission’s chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, during a press briefing.
INEC recalled that on February 4, it had already completed preparations for the election timetable and the broader schedule of activities, despite delays in the passage of the amended Electoral Act currently before the National Assembly. The commission noted that its proposals had been forwarded to lawmakers, although it acknowledged that certain aspects of the schedule might be affected depending on when the amended law is eventually passed.

The electoral body also highlighted that this forward planning aligns with earlier reforms introduced under former chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who had announced long-term election timelines spanning several decades. That strategy, INEC said, was designed to reduce voter uncertainty and prevent logistical challenges for the commission and other stakeholders.
With the release of the 2027 timetable, INEC says it aims to ensure early preparation, smoother coordination, and greater transparency ahead of the polls.
