Veteran Nollywood actor Akin Lewis has spoken candidly about one of the most painful moments of his life — the sudden end of his first marriage — admitting that, years later, he still cannot explain why his wife walked away.

In a recent interview monitored on the African A-List Podcast, the respected screen legend reflected on love, loss and his decades-long journey in the Nigerian film industry.

Lewis described the collapse of his first marriage as one of the saddest experiences of his life, noting that it left him with unanswered questions.

Speaking emotionally, the actor said, “I still don’t understand why the woman left till today.” He explained that the unexpected breakup deeply affected him and shaped his outlook on relationships and human behaviour.

Despite the emotional pain, Lewis said he chose not to remain stuck in the past, adding that the experience ultimately made him stronger, more focused and more appreciative of his life and career.

Beyond his personal story, the veteran actor also addressed ongoing debates surrounding the fees charged by experienced Nollywood actors, particularly complaints from some producers who claim established stars are too expensive.

Clearly displeased, Lewis dismissed such criticisms as disrespectful, insisting that professionalism and experience come at a cost. He described those who complain about his charges as “silly,” stressing that they fail to understand the value of years of dedication and hard work.

According to him, he has spent 52 years building his career across film and theatre, with 20 of those years devoted to formal education and intensive study of the craft. He added that he continues to learn and refine his skills to this day.

Lewis further stated that the notion that veteran actors should accept lower pay or feel grateful just to be cast is insulting to the pioneers who laid the foundation of the industry.

He said firmly, “If you need my services, pay me well or leave me out of the job,” emphasising that respect, professionalism and fair compensation remain non-negotiable standards for anyone who wants to work with him.
