Nollywood actor Lanre Afod has recounted how he battled a life-threatening health condition twice, saying excessive consumption of energy drinks contributed to his illness.

The actor shared the experience during a recent appearance on the Talk To B podcast, where he spoke about the severity of his condition and the warning he received from fellow actor Ricardo Agbor about his energy drink habit.

Afod said he came close to death on two occasions and described himself as a survivor of heart failure. He also recalled receiving calls and messages from people concerned about his health, including actress Alwell Ademola.

“I faced death twice. I saw death like this. I’m telling you, I’m a survivor of heart failure. Some people sent me messages, some people called me. One of the people was Alwell Ademola,” he said.

The actor further recounted an emotional conversation with one of his doctors during the period, saying he broke down after being told that his life was in danger.

“I remember one day, one of the doctors was talking to me, he said you’re dying, I burst into tears…we were discussing death like as if…the person next to me would say, ‘you’re still alive here, you woke up today?’ And I would answer: ‘Yes, I woke up’,” he said.

The experience, according to Afod, changed his perspective on energy drinks and motivated him to speak publicly against excessive consumption.

“I am an advocate against energy drink. Energy drink contributed to my own Illness,” he said.

He also recalled how Agbor confronted him about his habit before the health crisis began, warning him about the potential dangers of consuming too many energy drinks.

“Ricardo Agbor walked in and he said, ‘Lanre, stop! Why are you consuming so many energy drinks?’ He told me it causes heart problems. It was like a month after when the issue began.”

Beyond his health struggles, Afod spoke about the different roles he has taken on throughout his career in the entertainment industry.

The actor described himself as a versatile entertainer, highlighting his work in acting, music, dancing, film editing, songwriting and voice-over production.

“I am an all round entertainer. I act, I sing, dance and edit films. I can say that I have sung over 300 movie soundtracks. I’ve collaborated with a lot of people like Tope Alabi. I have written for Mayokun as well. I’m a voice over specialist,” he said.
