Adeyemi Kafayat, the wife of Nigerian singer Shanko Rasheed, has opened up about her marital struggles, sharing emotional accounts of abuse, the recent loss of their son, and disputes over their remaining children.

In a heartfelt interview with Biola Bayo, Kafayat claimed that following their son’s death, Shanko accused her of being responsible, confronting her at the hospital. She said that bystanders intervened and a doctor had to hide her to protect her from harm.

“When my son died, I called him. I didn’t even know my son had died. They just told me to excuse them. I called Rasheed again. He came and started chasing me around, claiming that I was responsible for the death of his son. People stood up for him, and the doctor hid me somewhere. I couldn’t have killed my son,” she recalled.

Kafayat also alleged that her husband has taken custody of their remaining children despite lacking the skills and stability to care for them. She claimed he smoked in front of their kids and had previously physically abused their late son.

“I raised Jamal with so much pain. I can’t kill him; everyone knows. Jamal was the reason I didn’t get tired of life. He took my remaining two kids away. Someone who knows nothing about raising children. He would smoke even in the presence of his children. I would be the one to take my kids off his premises. I have not seen my children in eight days. I don’t know where he has taken my children to. He is homeless, and he sleeps anywhere. It’s because he knows I have nobody,” she said.

She revealed that past abuse also led to the loss of another child during pregnancy.

“He was the one who disvirgined me. The baby died inside me because of the stress I went through during the pregnancy. I would run away from home to a friend, and he would still come there to beat me. One day, he beat Jamal, and it was too much,” Kafayat added.

She described the hardships they faced, including eviction from their home, which forced them to sleep in a church, and her appeals for assistance during her son’s illness.

“A year’s rent expired, and he couldn’t renew the rent. We were sleeping in the church. My son fell sick, and I called his father. Please have mercy on me, help me with this boy. I don’t have legs to take care of this boy,” she said.

Kafayat further alleged that Shanko prioritized personal matters over urgent medical care:

“Today is the eighth day since my son died. Just come and see this boy, I don’t understand his breathing. My son was gradually leaving at that time. He said he couldn’t come because he needed to fix his car. That I should help him raise one hundred and sixty thousand. I did all I could, but the boy still died at the hospital.”

Her account paints a picture of a deeply troubled relationship, marked by abuse, neglect, and ongoing struggles over the care and wellbeing of their children.
