Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has initiated early political consultations with the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), signaling the start of strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Hamzat confirmed via his X handle that he met with members of the influential caucus on Monday, describing the engagement as part of broader discussions on Lagos’ future leadership direction.
He said the meeting centred on reflection and planning for the state’s development.
“I value the experience and guidance shared. This is about listening, learning and working with others to build a stronger Lagos.”
The development has drawn attention to succession politics within Lagos, where the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is known for its structured internal processes that often shape candidates long before official primaries.
The GAC, regarded as the most powerful decision-shaping body within the Lagos APC, is chaired by Tajudeen Olusi and made up of about 30 senior political figures, including President Bola Tinubu and Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The council plays a key role in party direction, including zoning decisions, endorsements, and long-term succession planning.
Hamzat’s engagement with the group is widely seen as part of early consultations typical of Lagos politics, where aspirants begin lobbying influential stakeholders years before elections.

Meanwhile, online political discussions have intensified speculation about possible endorsements, with some social media accounts suggesting internal consensus may already be forming around the deputy governor.
A Lagos-based commentary account also claimed that some GAC members expressed emotional reactions during the meeting, including allegations that a prominent figure, Otunba Alebiosu, known as “Otunba Bush,” was moved to tears after Hamzat allegedly received backing for the APC governorship ticket.
“Lagos East senatorial leader and APC GAC member, Otunba Alebiosu (popularly known as Otunba Bush), was moved to tears of joy as Dr Obafemi Hamzat finally secured the GAC nod as the APC flagbearer for the 2027 Lagos governorship election,” the account wrote.
Earlier, the Justice Forum political group in Lagos had reportedly endorsed Hamzat for the governorship race.
Reports also indicate that Hamzat may be emerging as a possible consensus candidate within the party ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
