The 65-metre Galactica Star, a superyacht that was bought by notorious oil executive, Kolawole Aluko from about $1.8 billion he allegedly stole from the Nigerian government after diverting proceeds from crude oil sale
has been auctioned with Fraser, one of the world’s leading brokers, representing the seller and Burgess representing the buyer.
The luxury vessel alongside other real estate assets fraudulently acquired in the United States by the oil businessman had been seized by the US government following a massive corruption probe launched by the American and Nigerian governments into the theft.
The Galactica Star, custom-made by Dutch yard Heesen in 2013, was approved for auction by a US court and was listed for $42 million in April.
Aluko and Olajide Omokore, both close associates of former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke have all been charged in Nigeria on multiple corruption counts including stealing about $1.8 billion from crude oil sale. The monies were used to purchase private jets, super luxury cars, mansions in the United States, Europe and Nigeria and fund lavish lifestyles. Alison-Madueke is awaiting extradition from Britain where she is being held on bail. Nigeria is also seeking the extradition of Aluko from Switzerland where he lives.
The Galactica Star accommodates up to 12 guests overnight in 6 cabins, comprising a master suite, 1 VIP stateroom, and 4 double cabins. It is also capable of carrying up to 13 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience, according to website Yachtharbour, which said the sale was done on July 25.
The most alluring feature about the vessel is what goes on below the waterline. Van Ossaanen Naval Architects successfully created a yacht that cruises 30% more efficiently than a conventional round-bilged motor yacht in this size range.
Powered by 2 MTU 5,592 HP diesel engines and propelled by twin screw propellers, Galactica Star is capable of a top speed of 27 knots, and comfortably cruises at 24 knots. With her 90,000 fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 4,200 nautical miles at 14 knots. Her water tanks store around 30,000 litres of fresh water.
Beyonce and Jay Z are among top celebrities that have rented the Galactica Star for a holiday cruise from Aluko before the seizure, according to reports.
