The Federal Government has announced a sharp increase in the cost of obtaining new Nigerian passports, with citizens now expected to pay between N100,000 and N200,000 depending on the category of passport requested.

The revised rates, approved by the government and confirmed by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), will take effect from September 1, 2025, and will apply only to applications processed within Nigeria.

Under the new structure, a 32-page passport with a five-year validity will cost N100,000, while a 64-page passport valid for 10 years has been pegged at N200,000.

NIS spokesman, A.S. Akinlabi, said the upward review was necessary to sustain the quality, integrity, and security of the Nigerian travel document as the country prepares to roll out an upgraded e-passport.

“This review was carried out to strengthen service delivery and uphold the standard of the Nigerian passport as we prepare to launch the new version,” he stated.

The agency clarified that Nigerians living abroad will not be affected by the new rates. Passport applications in the diaspora will remain at $150 for a 32-page document with five years’ validity and $230 for the 64-page, 10-year option.

While the new charges have sparked concerns among Nigerians who fear they may further burden applicants, the Immigration Service assured citizens that accessibility and efficiency in passport issuance remain its priority.
