Following the Federal Government’s (FG) decision to raise such fees, Unity Secondary school pupils in Nigeria will now be required to pay a tuition charge of 100,000.
The Federal Government (FG) has raised the tuition for new students at Federal Government Colleges, also known as Federal Unity Colleges, to $100,000 via the Federal Ministry of Education (FME).
This instruction was provided in a communiqué from the Federal Ministry of Education’s Office of the Director of Senior Secondary Education Department.
The circular, which has the reference number ADF/120/DSSE/I and was signed by Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, Director of Senior Secondary Education, was sent to all Federal Unity College Principals nationwide on May 25, 2023.
The circular said, in part, “Approved fees/ charges for Federal Unity Colleges (1st Term), new students are expected to part with 100,000 instead of the previous N45,000.”
“The most recent fee/charge escalation will have an impact on almost all facets and activities of the school, including tuition and boarding costs, uniform, books, deposit, workbooks, prospectuses, caution fees, ID cards, stationery, clubs and societies, sports, additional lessons, insurance, etc.
Please be advised that the ministry has only authorized the fees and charges indicated below for all Unity Colleges, according to the message.
The Nigerian Parents Forum, a group of parents, had pleaded with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June 2023 to persuade the Federal Ministry of Education to rescind the over 100% increase in tuition that students at Federal Government Colleges or Unity Schools were required to pay.
The organization characterized the increase as arbitrary, insensitive, inappropriate, and at odds with President Tinubu’s pledge to implement social programs to assist Nigerian parents in navigating the economic difficulties brought on by the loss of gasoline subsidies in the nation.
Similar to this, the Federal Ministry of Education was instructed by the House of Representatives earlier in July to evaluate and reinstate the previous system of school fees in Federal Government Colleges.
